Nu är den här! Jag till och med använder den just i detta ögonblick! Min nya protes!
Vägen hit har inte varit spikrak. Ni som följt mig på Facebook vet att jag har väntat i flera veckor på att få min nya protes. Ni har fått läsa min klagan över att vara låst till hemmet och inte kunna göra något. De dagar är, förhoppningsvis, inte ens räknade längre... de är numera förbi.
Idag besökte jag sjukhuset för att hämta min nya protes. Varje gång man får en ny protes måste man "gå in den", d v s prova sig fram till rätt inställning och form. Etapp 1 innebär att prova protesen och göra de grövsta justeringarna på plats, medan etapp 2 innebär att använda protesen i 1-2 veckor och därefter göra de sista finjusteringarna. Helt logiskt! Men...
I beräkningen tar man inte med att en justeringing på morgonen kan vara helt förkastlig på eftermiddagen när stumpen har ändrat form. Ej heller tänker man på den emotionella delen av att få ett "nytt" ben. För det första är man van vid sin gamla protes, van vid hur det bör kännas (bortsett från det som inte längre fungerar) och för det andra så infinner sig en lätt panikkänsla då man måste lämna in sitt invanda ben i utbyte mot ett nytt (gamla, ej utslitna delar återanvänds).
Så där satt jag på sjukhuset i morse, skräckslagen men samtidigt full av förväntan! Egentligen tycker jag att man borde få bli inlagd en vecka under tiden som den nya protesen tillverkas och provas. Det vore perfekt att ha tillgång till sin tekniker varje dag samtidigt som sjuksystrarna plåstrar om ens nervösa själ.
Min nya protes har nu ställts in och efter att ha promenerat fram och tillbaka i sjukhusets korridorer känner jag mig nu trygg med att prova den hemma under en vecka.
Den fot jag använder just nu är ställbar (höjdmässigt), vilket är perfekt om man vill kunna gå i många olika sorters skor. Jag är inte begränsad till klackhöjden. Insikten idag var dock att jag verkligen saknar min gamla flex-fot. En flex-fot hjälper till med rörelsen framåt. Det blir som en liten fjädring när man går. Dessutom tillverkas underbensproteser på ett lite annorlunda sätt nuförtiden. Det innebär främst att innerhylsan tas bort helt och hållet. Det sägs ge en känsla av mer stöd och det ger också en slankare form runt knäet. Protesen verkar helt ok, men inte så mjuk på en del utsatta ställen, ex. där benet ligger nära huden utan muskelmassa eller fett som dämpar eventuella stötar. Därför har jag nu bestämt mig för att fråga om jag kan få ytterligare en protes, vilket skulle innebära att jag då har tre stycken. En protes med ställbar fot, en protes med en klackhöjd på ca 6,5 cm och den jag önskar mig .Det skulle vara en protes som är mer lämpad för aktiviteter. Jag hoppas alltså på att kunna få Otto Bocks "Dynamic Motion", en fot som är perfekt för promenader i besvärlig terräng. Jag vill också ha en "Anatomic 3D Pur Liner" från Otto Bock som är en ny typ av silikonhylsa. Den efterliknar underbenets anatomi med en optimal tryckavlastning. Perfekt för mig som vill kunna bli lite mer aktiv!
Men först måste jag se till att protesen jag hämtade idag sitter som handen i handsken...
eller benet på stumpen(!) ;-)
It's here! I'm even using it at this very moment! My new prosthesis!
The road here has not been plain sailing. Those of you who followed me on Facebook know that I have been waiting for weeks to get my new prosthesis. You have been reading my complaints about feeling trapped at home and not being able to do anything. Hopefully I don't have to count the days anymore ... they are now long gone.
Today I visited the hospital to pick up my new prosthesis. Every time you get a new prosthesis you must walk in it for a while to get used to it and to now if adjustments are needed. Phase 1 is to test the prosthesis and make the most serious adjustments, while Phase 2 involves the use of prosthesis in 1-2 weeks and then do the final adjustments. Totally logical! But ...
It does not take into account that adjustments in the morning might not be perfect in the afternoon when the leg has changed shape. And what about the emotional part of getting a "new" legs? Firstly, you are used to your old prosthesis, used to how it is supposed to feel (apart from what no longer works) and secondly you get this panic feeling when you have to give them your old prosthesis in exchange for a new one (old, not worn out parts, are being reused).
So there I sat in the hospital this morning, terrified, yet full of expectations! Actually, I think one should be hospitalized for one week during the time the new prosthesis is manufactured and tested. It would be ideal to have access to the technicians every day while the nurses heal a frightened soul.
My new prosthesis has now been adjusted and after walking up and down the hospital corridors, I now feel confident to try it at home for a week.
The artificial foot I'm using right now is adjustable (hightwise), which is perfect if you want to wear many different kinds of shoes. I am not limited to the heel height, but my insight of today was that I really miss my previous flex-foot. A flex-foot helps you with the forward motion. It becomes like a little spring when walking. They make lower leg prosthesis in a slightly different way nowadays. This mainly means that the inner fitting is removed altogether. It gives a feeling of more support and it gets a sleeker shape around the knee. The new prosthesis seems ok, but not so soft in some exposed places like where the bones are close to the skin without muscle mass or fat to protect it. Therefore I have now decided to ask if I can get another prosthesis, which would mean that I then would have three. One prosthesis with adjustable foot, one prosthesis with a heel height of approximately 6.5 cm and the one I would like to have. A prosthesis more suitable for activities. So I hope to be able to get Otto Bock's "Dynamic Motion", a foot that is ideal for walking in rough terrain. I also want an "Anatomic 3D Pur Liner" from Otto Bock. It is a new type of silicone sleeve. It mimics the anatomy of the lower leg with an optimal pressure relief. Perfect for me who would like to become a little more active!
But first, I have to make this prosthesis to fit like a glove ... or like a prosthesis on a leg(!) ;-)
